1960s Barbie After Five
To celebrate 60 years of Barbie, the University undertook the project of recreating her outfits through the decades, and putting them on every kind of female body, also celebrating the different shapes and sizes we come in.
I recreated the 'After Five' dress in a dark green velvet, a challenging fabric choice for the first full-scale dress I had made.
It also included a waspie short corset to help cinch the waist. I got very immersed in researching the history of the modern corset, it's hay-day and then reasons for the downfall. I think that these are important factors to consider when recreating these garments, such strong ties to the chaning role of women in society.
